Tiger Times - June 7-18
Well Tiger Nation, we are in the home stretch. This will be the final edition of the Tiger Times for the current school year. It is my sincere hope that you have found this weekly update, along with our new website, a useful tool in keeping you informed of the myriad of activities at Woodroffe High School.
This week, I would like to congratulate our student athletes for a great year. Individual and collective performances were celebrated at last Tuesday’s Athletic Banquet.
I also wish to highlight our student artists and musicians. The Woodroffe Stage Band proudly represented the school by playing in the CHEO Telethon on Sunday June 6. Next weekend, two Tigers from the Hello Dolly! production are in nomination for the 2010 Cappies: Skye Oldham for best costumes and Alex Zwierzchowski for best actor in a musical. The Cappies Gala is being held at the NAC on June 13. Good luck and most of all, thank you for the entertainment.

Tiger Times - May 31-June 4
Happy Birthday Woody and congratulations on celebrating your 50th this past weekend! There is a very strong sense of belonging in the Woodroffe High School Community. The 50th reunion was a resounding success. The celebrations provided an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with friends from the past and reminisce on the role WHS played in their formative years. A huge thank you to all the members of the 50th Committee. Your dedication contributed to the creation of new memories.
Congratulations to Nelly Yoseke, grade 12 student, who will be honoured at the CAYFO (Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa) Gala Monday evening. Nelly is the runner-up for the 2010 Academic Perseverance Award.
Congratulations are also in order for our runners. Over 40 Tigers (students and staff) participated in the 10km run on Saturday. A special mention goes out to Alex Berhe who ran the race in 36min 15sec. Alex was 3rd out of 500 males 19 & under, 54th out of 9500 runners! Special mention as well goes out to Mrs. Bruski who realized a life-long dream by completing her first full marathon. Way to earn your stripes Tigers!

Congratulations to Brian Schmidt, winner of the 2010 Capital Educators Award. Brian received his award, along with 15 other educators from the greater Ottawa region at Thursday’s Edugala.
Once again this week, Tigers made us proud. The quality of the choreographies at the spring dance showcase was amazing. Kelsey Hick’s original play Shellshock was shortlisted to the final four in the provincial Wayne Fairhead New Play Award (Sears Drama Festival). Finally, our Track & Field team qualified 9 athletes for the Eastern Regional Finals in Belleville next week, the largest delegation in recent history.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Tiger mothers in the Woodroffe community.
I would like to thank all the students, parents and staff who help make the Pemberton visitors feel at home and welcome while visiting our beautiful city.
Congratulations to Woodroffe's 1st Bottled Water Free Tournament. Last Friday’s rugby tournament was a great success with many students using reusable water containers and reducing their dependence on plastic water bottles. WHS 50th Anniversary water bottles are for sale for $10.00 from Mrs. Newsome (room 206).
I would like to remind parents and students that they have until Friday, May 14th, to respond to our Safe School Survey. See the posting below for details.
Last but not least, you are all invited to attend our Multicultural Potluck this Thursday. Starting at 6:00 p.m., this event allows the Tiger community to celebrate its diversity.

Tiger Times - May 3-7

What a successful week it has been for our Tigers. Woodroffe’s Transportation Technology team earned 2nd place at the CAA Automotive Skills Competition being held at Algonquin College on April 28th. Congratulations to Michel Belanger, Jacob Widmaier, James MacIntyre, Michael Tan, Curtis Miller, Brendan Montone, and Mr. Patrick Lawlor (Head of Technology) for a job well done.
Congratulations are also in order for Morgan Jeffcott. While attending the French for the Future conference being held at the University of Ottawa this week, Morgan earned a $1,000 scholarship from the university for her breadth of knowledge on Francophone Culture.
Last but certainly not least, I would like to congratulate the entire cast and crew of Hello Dolly! The performance was spectacular! Some even referred to the show as magical. After countless hours of preparation and rehearsals, everyone’s hard work paid off. You have every right to be proud of your work. I look forward to reading the Cappies reviews in the Ottawa Citizen.
Thank you Tigers for representing Woodroffe HS in such a positive light.
Finally, I would like to welcome our visiting students from Pemberton (BC). We certainly hope that you will enjoy your week in Ottawa.

Welcome back to Pemberton exchange students. Just enough time to get caught up before you host your counterparts from B.C.
On a more sombre note, Cathy Nevins, our Superintendent of instruction, passed away on Wednesday, April 21st. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.

Tiger Times - April 19-23

It’s AUCTION TIME again. Hope to see you all Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. for our annual school auction. There are more than 150 items to bid on!
Our Tiger Artists have really excelled in recent weeks. Shellshock, an original student play, exploring the traumatic effects of war on an innocent civilian was this year’s entry in the Sears Drama Festival. Two Tigers earned Awards of Merit: Allie Grant for her acting in the lead role as Melissa, and Kelsey Hicks for her writing. Kelsey's script has now been submitted for the provincial 2010 Wayne Fairhead New Play Award. Last Friday, the Kiwanis Music Festival wrapped up with the WHS Stage Band playing to a Gold Medal. The band showed dedication to the moment, amazing dynamics and sensitivity to the music. The dedication of our talented Tech Crew is much appreciated by both performers and audience members. Your next opportunity to see our Tiger Artists perform will be when the curtain rises for Hello Dolly! Don’t miss it.
Finally, to the cast, crew and Pit Band of Hello Dolly!, the clean-up session will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24th. Bring homework and food.

Tiger Times - April 12-16

Once again, Tigers earned their stripes. Congratulations to the cast of Shellshock, Woodroffe’s entry in the 2010 Sears Drama Festival, for a most impressive performance last Tuesday. Under the watchful eye of author and director Kelsey Hicks, the cast’s delivery and authenticity was impressive considering of the serious content of the play.
Our Tiger athletes also held their own with the Jr. Girls advancing to the volleyball semi-finals. In badminton, Lyna Du and Anun Petprao finished 1st in mixed doubles at the seniors’ tournament while Andy Leung and Cam Rodgers placed 3rd in boys’ doubles.
I would like to remind you all that Woodroffe HS is hosting the Kiwanis Music Festival this week.
Finally, to the cast of Hello Dolly!, set move-in and assembly will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17th.
